BPVS3 assesses students’ receptive (hearing) vocabulary: for each question the teacher says a word and the student responds by selecting the picture (from four options) that best illustrates the word’s meaning. Benefits:

Measures of Children’s Mental Health & Psychological Wellbeing - £399.50 (incl. VAT)

A valuable collection of currently unpublished assessments, made available in one easy-to-access resource.

Recent research suggests that 10% of all children from ages 5-16 years suffer from difficulties in mental health. In line with the Children’s Plan (DCSF, 2007), schools, teachers and educational psychology services are increasingly required to help with the early recognition and identification of these children. The portfolio is therefore a timely and necessary resource to assist schools and associated staff in their function as the “front line” of child and adolescent mental health services.

The portfolio contains 7 booklets plus an introduction. Each booklet contains a general overview of the measures, including frameworks for research, application and intervention. Each measure is then presented individually regarding directions for use, technical details and comparisons with similar measures.

Benefits:

  • Addresses the wide range of emotional and psychological issues that children may encounter – both negative and positive
  • Helps non-specialist staff identify the early signs of mental health difficulties so appropriate referrals and interventions can follow
  • Booklets structured specifically to relate to the Every Child Matters agenda
  • Schools can use the results to complete Standard 4 of their Ofsted Self-Evaluation Form (SEF) relating specifically to "Personal Development and Wellbeing"

Raven’s Progressive Matrices and Vocabulary Scales - £224.95 (incl. VAT)

Measure non-verbal and verbal aspects of general ability

Raven's Progressive Matrices and Vocabulary Scales enjoy a long and famous history in the assessment of general cognitive abilities in children.

The Progressive Matrices usefully provide an assessment of non-verbal ability, an important feature for our ethnically diverse population, and the Vocabulary Scales provide scores in the verbal domain.

This important instrument has now been restandardised for the UK population.

In this standardisation study 640 children aged between four and 11 years were administered the Coloured Progressive Matrices (CPM) and the Crichton Vocabulary Scale (CVS) and 960 children aged between seven and 18 years received the Standard Progressive Matrices - Plus version (SPM-Plus) and Mill Hill Vocabulary Scale (MHV).

The data was collected in groups for the SPM+ and MHV and comparison studies against individual administration were completed. Equating studies on other forms of the progressive matrices and vocabulary scales (e.g. SPM-Classic, CPM-parallel) were also carried out.

This standardisation represents the most significant development for the children's version of the Raven's progressive matrices and Vocabulary Scales since the 1979 & 1982 standardisations with children aged from five to 16 years.

The re-standardisation means that you can confidently use the Raven's to assess non-verbal and verbal aspect of general ability for children in the UK.

Along with this standardisation, Pearson Assessment has completed an extensive redesign of the product, simplifying and updating materials. This makes the test more attractive and easier to use.

Self Image Profiles - £82.77 (incl. VAT)

Quickly assess self image and self esteem in children and adolescents

The Self Image Profiles (SIP) are brief self report measures that tap the individual's theory of self. There are 2 forms; the SIP-C for children aged 7 to 11 years and the SIP-A for adolescents aged 12 to 16 years.

The SIP provides a visual display of Self Image, enabling the child/young person to reveal to him/ herself, as well as to the clinician, the way in which they construe themselves as they complete it. The SIP also provides a measure of Self Esteem, which is estimated by the discrepancy between ratings of 'How I am' and 'How I would like to be'.

The SIP can be used in both an educational context by Teachers, Specialist Support Services and Educational Psychologists, and in health service environments by Psychologists, Paediatricians, School Nurses, Counsellors and Specialists working with children and adolescents.

Features:

  • Child friendly
  • Easy to administer and score
  • UK norms, based on a clinical and non clinical samples
  • Can be used as a screening instrument where a quick assessment of a child or young person's view of self is required.

York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension (Primary) - £189.76 (incl. VAT)

An exciting new suite of tests for assessing letter and word recognition as well as phonological processing to passage reading.

The York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension (YARC) enables teachers to assess their pupils’ reading skills from an early age through to the end of primary. It focuses not just on decoding and sight reading, but crucially on reading comprehension.

The assessments at passage level concentrate on reading for meaning, enabling pupils’ reading and reading comprehension to be regularly assessed and progress easily monitored. Questions linked to each passage demand the use of deduction and inference to arrive at the answers, giving teachers vital information about their pupils’ skills far beyond decoding and retrieval of information.

In addition to the passages for pupils aged 5 to 11, YARC also includes four short tests (letter-sound knowledge, sound deletion (supported by pictures), sound isolation and early word recognition) specifically designed for five and six year olds, although data will be available for the age range four to seven years.

Assessing alphabetic knowledge, phonological skills and word reading, these tests are especially useful at identifying any underlying difficulties in phonological awareness and the acquisition of letter-sounds that could hamper progress in pupils’ reading.

The Passage Reading set comprises two equivalent passages for each year from Reception (P1) to Y6 (P7), each with eight comprehension questions of increasing complexity. A version of GL Assessment’s Single Word Reading Test is also included as a benchmark test.
